Cardboard boxes provide security
Of all the reasons cats love cardboard boxes, safety is the most important. Although cats are real explorers, they can also experience a lot of stress when they find themselves in a new environment. An instinctive response is to hide or take shelter, and what better place than a cardboard box?
From an oresearch by the University of Utrecht shows that cats given a cardboard box to hide in experience less stress and get used to a new environment more easily. The study was conducted in a Dutch animal shelter among 19 cats that were divided into 2 groups, where the test group received a box to hide in upon entering the shelter. Subsequently, the stress was measured in both groups and it turned out that the cats with a cardboard box had significantly less stress than the cats without a box.
Each box its own territory
By nature, cats are quite territorial, preferring to have their own place and will defend it if other cats come in it. Its own cardboard box offers a cat a safe place to withdraw and to keep an overview of the environment.
